In “Literacy Assessment: Definitions, Principles, and Practices,” (2018) the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) calls for student engagement as a key assessment practice:
Students engage in literacy assessment as self-reflective literacy learners. Literacy reflective practices include an understanding and appreciation of literacy assessment, of why it’s important, and of how it works, thus contributing to student agency. Teachers help students become self-reflective; in this process, students develop reflective habits of mind, enhancing their learning in literacy classrooms, in classrooms in other disciplines, and, later, in the workplace. In this first essay assignment in English 102 we expanded our understanding of rhetoric and rhetorical strategies, genre knowledge, and the writing process while also practicing meta-cognitive reflection strategies designed to assist you in your own self-assessment of your writing. That is, while we learned how to write, we also learned about writing.
This reflection assignment asks you to reflect specifically on how you went about evaluating your own writing and how this contributed to your writing process. Knowledge about your writing process will help you to successfully transform what you learn from one writing context to another (school, work, personal).
Steps to take:
1. Think about and re-read your goals for this class that you set during Week 1.
2. Think about your writing process for this first paper. What steps did you take before, during, and after writing in order to write and revise? Explain your process.
3. Read over your weekly reflection posts/notes. Look for concepts, themes, “aha” moments, intriguing questions. Think “meta-cognitively”; that is, critically reflect on the thinking you seemed to be doing during this writing process. Jot notes.
4. Review your results in the final draft. How closely did you meet audience expectations for the genre (in terms of content/structure/style)?
5. Think about how peer/group and teacher feedback contributed to your ability to successfully self-review your writing.
Please submit a one-page, multi-paragraph reflection letter that addresses several of the following questions:
1. Have you ever been asked to self-assess your writing before? How? If so, more or less often that to assess a peer or another piece of writing? Why do you think that is?
2. How comfortable are you assessing your own writing? Is it hard? Enjoyable? Why do you think that is?
3. What previous knowledge did you need to adapt/transform in order to write and revise this paper? What did you already know about how to write this paper and what did you need to change/learn?
4. How does your writing illustrate that you have progressed in your ability to assess/evaluate your own writing?
5. How did you reflect on your writing? Did you? Did you evaluate your own writing before submitting your final draft? If so, how? What resources and tools did you use?
6. How did peer/group and teacher feedback contribute to your ability to self-review your writing?
7. How can you transform what you learned about writing and self-assessment to meet audience expectations in other classes or in writing that you do outside of school?
8. Now, write a paragraph in which you design your “ideal” self-assessment process for writing based on what worked and what didn’t work while writing this assignment.
